New York City, US · Contract · $300,000 – $300,000

About this role

At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy by handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses. We're seeking a Legal AI Engineer for a fixed engagement to build foundational legal team AI infrastructure. You'll design, stand up systems, document thoroughly, and hand off maintainable tools to the team.

Day-to-day, package Claude skills, workflows, and dashboards into shared assets the whole team can use. Wire together AI tooling with MCP integrations for seamless data flows and engage Gusto's AIT team. Build a structured, queryable legal repository and implement AI workflows for contract review, matter intake, and litigation operations.

Provide services to a legal team already building AI through Claude, reporting to the Senior Manager of Legal Contracting Operations & AI Systems. Design fast, measurable, safe workflows based on specs from legal, legal ops, and cross-functional stakeholders. This engagement blends legal infrastructure with applied AI for hybrid practitioners.

Deliver maintenance runbooks for every system and train team members on administration to enable independent iteration. AI is fundamental at Gusto; all team members actively engage with relevant AI tools. Grow fluency as technology evolves, with requirements assessed in interviews.

Requirements

  • Hybrid legal and technical background to translate legal work into scalable AI systems
  • Experience with Claude AI for building tooling and infrastructure in legal contexts
  • Proficiency in AI integrations like MCP and collaboration with internal AI teams
  • Knowledge of legal workflows including contract review, matter intake, and litigation operations
  • Ability to build structured, queryable repositories for legal knowledge and precedents
  • Skills in designing measurable, safe AI workflows for high-volume legal use cases
  • Strong documentation practices for runbooks and system handoffs

Responsibilities

  • Package individual team members' Claude skills, workflows, and dashboards into shared, maintainable assets
  • Build MCP integrations so data flows without manual handoffs and engage Gusto's AIT team on connections
  • Stand up a structured, queryable knowledge layer fed by existing legal research, positions, precedents, and playbooks
  • Implement AI-assisted workflows for contract first-pass review, matter intake and routing, and litigation operations
  • Develop prompt libraries for recurring legal tasks like subpoena responses, demand letters, and notices
  • Design workflows that are fast, measurable, and safe based on specifications from legal stakeholders
  • Deliver a maintenance runbook for every system built and train designated team members on administration
  • Establish adoption baselines to measure progress and guide future iterations

Benefits

  • Equity (RSUs) to share in Gusto's success
  • Total Rewards philosophy with competitive offers by role, level, and location
  • AI-focused environment to actively engage with evolving tools
  • Workplace reflecting the diverse small businesses served
