The Industry Solutions Engineering team at Microsoft is a global engineering organization that partners directly with customers to leverage the latest technologies for their toughest challenges.

As a Principal Data Scientist, you will oversee data acquisition, ensure proper formatting and description, and coach engineers in data cleaning and analysis best practices. You will evaluate models, drive best practices, and develop operational models that run at scale, while also identifying and inventing new evaluation methods.

You will be part of a cross-functional team of software engineers, data scientists, technical program managers, and designers who work side-by-side with high-impact strategic customers. Together, you will build innovative cloud-based solutions, contribute to open source, and collaborate with Microsoft product teams.

This role offers the opportunity to research and maintain deep industry knowledge, identify strategy opportunities, and contribute to thought leadership. Requirements

Expertise in data management and developing statistical techniques to analyze data and find patterns.
Proven experience in machine learning, statistical modeling, and data science at scale.
Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or R, with ability to write extensible code.
Experience working with cloud-based solutions and services (Azure preferred).
Ability to coach and mentor engineers in data best practices and model evaluation.
Knowledge of industry trends and ability to contribute to thought leadership.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and high-impact customers.

Responsibilities

Oversee data acquisition and ensure data is properly formatted and described.
Coach engineers in data cleaning and analysis best practices.
Identify gaps in current data sets and drive ethics and privacy discussions around data collection and preparation.
Evaluate team models and recommend improvements, driving best practices for models.
Develop operational models that run at scale and conduct thorough reviews of data analysis and modeling techniques.
Identify and invent new evaluation methods for models and data.
Research and maintain deep knowledge of industry trends and technologies to identify strategy opportunities.
Write extensible code that spans multiple features and develop expertise in proper debugging techniques.
