About this role

Exotel is a leading full-stack customer engagement platform powering 70M+ conversations daily across voice, messaging, video, and AI. As Principal Engineer - Messaging you will own technical architecture decisions for high-scale messaging systems that serve thousands of businesses across emerging markets.

Day-to-day work centers on designing distributed microservices, building RESTful APIs, and adopting new technologies that improve scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency. You will tune deployment pipelines, enforce SLAs, and drive performance engineering across messaging workloads.

You will collaborate daily with Product, Engineering, and Operations teams while providing architectural guidance and mentoring junior engineers. The environment emphasizes engineering best practices, infrastructure automation with Kubernetes and Jenkins, and observability through Grafana, Kibana, and Elasticsearch.

The role offers the opportunity to influence the product roadmap, shape a high-performance engineering culture, and work with modern cloud infrastructure on a platform recently granted a Virtual Telecom Operator license.

Requirements

Strong experience in backend/product engineering environments
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms: AWS (preferred), Azure, or GCP
Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and scalability
Experience designing and developing RESTful services
Strong programming expertise in Golang (preferred) or PHP
Experience with Kubernetes, Jenkins, Git, and Ansible
Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Grafana, Kibana, and Elasticsearch
Strong Linux, networking, and scripting fundamentals

Responsibilities

Drive technical architecture decisions and influence the product roadmap
Explore and adopt new technologies to improve system scalability, reliability, and efficiency
Provide architectural guidance and technical mentorship to engineering teams
Improve deployment processes, SLAs, operational efficiency, and engineering best practices
Build scalable systems and drive operational excellence across teams
Collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders across Product, Engineering, and Operations
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to building a high-performance engineering culture
